Materials
• The unit division board
• 9 green skittles
• A box with 81 green beads
• Questions written on a division slip
Note: Please observe the complete work cycle from taking the child’s consent to winding up material after working with it.
1. Bring the material to workplace with the help of the child.
2. Introduce the board to the child explaining its use.
3. Inform him that the numbers at the top of the boards are the dividends.
4. Inform him that the numbers on the side will be the answers.
5. Write the first equation for example 27divided by 9 on a piece of paper.
6. Place 9 green skittles along the top of the board.
7. Start placing the beads in the grooves of the board horizontally below each skittle until all the 27 beads have been placed in the grooves.
8. Now draw the child’s attention towards the fact that 27 beads have completely filled three rows and point to the number 3 written among the numbers on the left hand side column on the board.
10. Ask the child to write the answer on the paper if required.
11. Repeat all the numbers for the table of 9 in the same way.
12. To give the concept of remainder to the child, take a number which is not completely divisible by nine for example, 12.
13. Place all the twelve beads in the grooves on the board as described above.
14. Show the child that row number 1 is completely filled until the ninth skittle but row two is not completely filled therefore 12 is not completely divisible by 9.
15. Ask the child to count the beads in the second row, i.e. 3. Tell the child that for the question 12 divided by 9, 1 is the quotient and 3 is the remainder.
